Designing for Context: The Malayalam Ad on Zomato's Order-Tracking Page

When Zomato opened its order-tracking experience as advertising space for hyperlocal brands, the interesting opportunity was not simply another digital placement.

It was context.

A customer had already ordered food. They were waiting for the order. The advertising environment was connected to that moment.

For a Malayalam-speaking audience, that created room for something more specific than a translated generic advertisement.

An advertisement was developed around the line “കണ്ണ് കാണുന്നില്ലേ?” and a familiar cultural connection between hunger and eyesight. The aim was to make the placement feel native to the environment rather than simply place a conventional banner inside an app.

That distinction is important.

Contextual marketing is often discussed as a media-buying concept: the ad appears next to relevant content.

But context can be much broader.

It can include language, location, timing, behaviour, mood and what the customer is doing immediately before seeing the message.

A Malayalam message in Kerala is one layer of context.

A message appearing while someone is waiting for food is another.

The two together create a stronger creative opportunity.

The campaign was also useful as a test of the medium itself. Instead of recommending the placement to a client without experience, the agency chose to understand the format by using it.

That creates a valuable principle for marketing work: when a new medium appears, experiencing the environment can reveal things a media kit cannot.

What does the placement actually look like?

How much attention does it receive?

What does the surrounding interface communicate?

Does the creative feel native?

Is the audience in a state where the message makes sense?

These details can change the quality of the work.

The bigger lesson is not that brands should advertise on food-delivery apps.

It is that media and creative should not always be treated as separate decisions.

Sometimes the best creative idea is hidden inside the context where the message appears.

The medium is not just where the advertisement sits.

It can be part of the idea.
