Google Business Profile for Kerala Businesses: A Practical Setup Guide

The short version

Your free Google Business Profile decides whether you appear in Maps and "near me" searches. How to set it up and keep it working for a Kerala business.

When someone in Kottayam searches for "clinic near me," "bakery in Pala" or "AC service Changanassery," the first thing they usually see is not a website. It is a map with three businesses under it. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and for most local businesses in Kerala it is the most valuable free marketing tool available.

Many businesses either have no profile, have one they never claimed, or have one with the wrong phone number and timings from years ago. Fixing that is often the fastest marketing win a local business can get.

How Google decides who shows up

Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence.

Relevance is how well your profile matches what someone searched for. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known your business is, which includes your reviews and ratings and how often your business is mentioned and linked to across the web.

You cannot change your distance from a customer. You can do a lot about relevance and prominence. Google is also clear that there is no way to pay for a better position in these local results.

Step 1: Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business name on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, look for the option to claim it. If there is none, create one at business.google.com.

Google will ask you to verify that you own the business, usually through a phone call, a video of your premises, or a code. Verified profiles are more likely to appear in search, so do not skip this step.

Use a Google account that belongs to the business, not to a freelancer or a former employee. Many Kerala businesses lose access to their own profile because someone else created it years ago.

Step 2: Fill in everything

Complete every field Google offers. The more complete the profile, the easier it is for Google to match you to the right searches.

Use your exact business name, without stuffing extra keywords into it. Choose the most accurate primary category, then add secondary ones. Add your full address with a landmark people actually use, your phone and WhatsApp numbers, your website, and your opening hours, including special hours for Onam, Christmas, Vishu and other holidays.

Write a clear description of what you do and which areas you serve. Mention the towns and localities customers search for, naturally, the way you would say it to a person.

Step 3: Add real photos and keep adding them

Upload photos of your front entrance, so people can find you from the road, and of the inside, your products, your team and your work. Real photos build trust faster than any text.

Add a few new photos every month. An active profile tells both Google and customers that the business is open and cared for.

Step 4: Ask for reviews, and reply to every one

Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local ranking and the first thing customers read.

Ask happy customers for a review at the moment they are happiest: after a successful delivery, a good treatment or a finished project. Make it easy by sending the direct review link on WhatsApp.

Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and by name. Google itself notes that replying shows customers you value their feedback. A calm, helpful reply to a bad review often wins more trust than a page of perfect five-star ratings.

Never buy reviews or post fake ones. They can get your profile suspended, and customers can usually tell.

Step 5: Keep it alive

Use Google posts for offers, events and new products. Check your profile once a month to make sure nobody has suggested wrong timings or a wrong phone number.

What to expect

A properly set up and actively managed profile often starts bringing more calls, direction requests and website visits within a few weeks. Google shows you these numbers inside the profile, so you can see exactly what it is doing for you.

For a local business in Kerala, this free listing often brings more real customers than paid ads. It is worth getting right before spending money anywhere else.
